Sound and Music

My Dad bought me a piano when I was four. I remember my favorite piano teacher, Norma Tanega. She said whatever you do never stop playing music. I don’t know if she was saying that for herself, for me, or for both us but I listened. When I learned of her passing I sat down to play. I could feel her coaching me, nudging me and laughing at the child like fourishes I like to do. The clicking of my fingernails on the keys irritated her and she shook her head in disapproval, laughing at herself at the same time as I continued my lesson.
